Wilderness and Remote First Aid and Babysitter Boot Camp

Long Beach, June 14, 2010The American Red Cross Greater Long Beach Chapter today announced the release of its new Wilderness and Remote First Aid course, which is designed for scouts, outdoor enthusiasts and people who work in remote wilderness environments; and Baby Sitting Boot Camp,

“The new Wilderness and Remote First Aid course fills a real need in our community,” said Red Cross, spokesperson, Margaret Arbini Madonna. “We all know immediate care can help save lives and prevent serious injuries; and this course is a great way to help protect people who spend time outdoors for work or play.”
 
The new 16-hour Wilderness and Remote First Aid course gives people the skills needed to respond to an emergency when help may be delayed. The course includes training on:
 
  • Head (Brain), Neck and Spinal Injuries
  • Heat-Related Emergencies
  • Hypothermia
  • Altitude-Related Illnesses
  • Allergies and Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Bone and Joint Injuries
  • Wounds and Wound Infection
The course will be held on Saturday June 26 and Sunday June 27 at Progress Park in Downey. Participants are asked to wear relaxed, comfortable clothes that can get dirty. 
 
“The Wilderness and Remote First Aid course offers flexibility to adapt the course to varying environments,” said Arbini-Madonna. “Plus, major portions of the course are taught outdoors to ensure participants are prepared to respond in those settings.”
 
The course is based on the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines and has been reviewed and/or supported by the American Camp Association, American Canoe Association, National Recreation and Park Association, and JCC Association.

Babysitter’s Boot Camp
The Red Cross trains over 120,000 babysitters each year nationwide. Red Cross Babysitter’s Boot Camp Training Program teaches youth the skills they need to be a safe babysitter. The 3 day course is fun, fast-paced and hands-on with exciting activities, videos, role playing and lively discussions. Students will learn how to tell when there is an emergency and when it’s a situation they can confidently handle on their own.   
 
The class is taught by an authorized Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Instructor who will also teach you other great babysitting skills such as:
 
 
  • Supervising children and infants
  • Performing basic child-care skills such as diapering and feeding
  • Choosing safe, age-appropriate games and toys
  • Handling bedtime and discipline issues
  • Identifying safety hazards and preventing injuries
  • Caring for common injuries and emergencies such as choking, burns, cuts and bee stings
  • Communicating effectively with parents
  • Finding and interviewing for babysitting jobs
With Red Cross Babysitter’s Boot Camp Training, students receive training handbook, emergency reference guide, training CD, and first aid kit portfolio. The training also gives excellent tips on how to run your own babysitting business. The program will show you how to create a resume, interview with prospective parents and keep track of babysitting clients.
